Happy Holidays!!!!

During the first week of December the Speech Stars will be continuing our Go Green lessons. We will explore ways and reasons to conserve water. Something that is very important for Georgia in this time of drought.  Look for things you can do at home to save water that will be coming home with your student.

The second week of December we will be learning about the different holiday traditions in Mexico. Using a graphic organizer we will compare and contrast these traditions with the ones that we have here in the states.  Encourage your child to share any holiday traditions that you share as a family!

During the week before break we will be doing our traditional cookie decorating, this is something the children and I  look forward to every  year!

I hope you have safe and happy holiday season and look forward to seeing you next year!

November

This month we talked about the importance of friendship and ways to make and keep friends here at school. We also shared the many things that we are thankful for.  This month was also used as a time for reviewing the things we have learned this year so far. Vocabulary, books and states were reviewed through games and conversation.

Keep practicing your speech strategies at home and I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday!

October

This month in speech our Speech Stars will be learning about the state of California as we continue our "Fifty Nifty" trip around the United States.

We will also be contiuning our Book of the Month lessons.  This month the book of the month is The Teddy Bear, by David McPhail.  We will be focusing on the trait of organization. Organization is the the sequencing of events so that the story makes sense. We will be spending two weeks on this book, so be looking for some activities coming home that we have done.

At the end of the month we will do our first "Go Green" lesson as we explore ways to make our world and environment a better and healthier place to live.

As always please feel free to call or email me at anytime!

Welcome to Speech!

Dear Nicholson parents, guardians and students,

I am really looking forward to working with your super speech star students!  This is my 7th year here at Nicholson and I am very excited about the upcoming year. Ms. Vanis has taken another position here at Nicholson as an ESOL teacher, we are really going to miss her here in the speech suite, but we are very excited for her and this new opportunity!  Ms. Laurie McGillis will be joining our speech team for a few mornings per week. She is based at Rocky Mountain Elementary School and has many years of great experience to share.  I am very excited to have her!

We will continue our speech theme from last year “Fifty Nifty United States” as we learn about the 50 states aligning your individual speech student’s goals with their grade level curriculum.  We will also be incorporating 6+1 Traits of Writing and the Book of the Month into our speech time. This is a new program that supports our school wide goal of increased achievement in written communication.  A few times per month we will also be doing a “Go Green” lesson as we explore various ways to care for our environment and the world around us.

I will be sending one speech homework assignment home every week.  This assignment will take no longer than 5 minutes and should be completed with your child.  Please sign the homework and your child will be rewarded when it is returned.  Throughout the year I would like to give your children rewards, including candy. Please let me know of any food allergies or special diet needs that you would like me to be aware of.

Each year we are required by law, to meet and discuss your child’s improvements in the from of an IEP (Individualized Education Program).  However we are not limited meeting only once a year.  Please call any time if you would like to schedule a meeting or just talk about your child.  I can be reached at 770-928-5573 or by email at Faith.Harmeyer@cobbk12.org

I am looking forward to a great year!

Faith Harmeyer
