WELCOME BACK......6 WEEKS TO GO!!!!  I trust you all had a safe and relaxing Spring Break.  The kids came back fired up and ready to learn; and we still have so much to cover!!

CALENDAR:

April 23-25 is CRCT for 2nd grade with make-ups on 4/30, 5/1, and 5/2

Some helpful tips on testing days:

     1. Get a good night's sleep!

     2. Eat a healthy breakfast, and pack a healthy snack.

     3. BE ON TIME!!!!  We will begin proptly at 8:00 am each morning.

     4. Relax, and do your best!  You know this stuff!!

Saturday, April 19 ----The Great Nicholson Clean-Up and Brick installation   9-12.   Thank you wonderful class for my brick!  I will see you all there in the morning!!

Tuesday, April 22----Earth Day...we will be planting our "Chia People" so please remember to bring in a clean, white sock and buttons if you haven't already.

Friday, April 25----Spirit/Chick-fil-A biscuits/ Banking day

Book Reports III due Tuesday, April 29!!!!  This time they will be on display for all of 2nd grade to view, so do your best!!

Busy time before Spring Break!!

Report Cards go home this Thursday...please sign the enclosed card and return to me

***This Thursday is the Second Grade Performance...have students in our room by 6:45...dressed and ready to go on around 7:15!!

Friday 28th:  Book Reports due, Spirit Day, Chick-fil-A biscuits $2, banking day

Friday April 4th is Art Enrichment Day...one of my favorite days here at Nicholson each year!!

April 7-April 11...Spring Holidays...NO SCHOOL!!!

Reminder!!!  Please send in a white sock and an assortment of buttons for our "chia pets" we will be making on Earth Day 4/22.

Curriculum notes:

Math: multiplication and 3 digit regrouping

Science: life cycles

Social Studies: Australia

Language Arts:  We will be finishing up with the last four stories in the basil reader.

February...here we come!

Hello all!  Can you believe it's almost February?  Where does the time go?  We have had a very busy and productive January!!

The students finally earned their Special Treat!  Way to go guys, you have earned it!!

February 8: Foundation Bingo Night at 6:30

February 4-12: Candy Gram Sales in the morning before school

WELCOME BACK!!

I trust you all had a safe and happy holiday vacation!  It was nice to rest and regroup, and now it's back to learning!!

Upcoming Events

Monday, Jan. 21:  Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday....no school

Tuesday, Jan. 22 through Monday, Jan. 28 is conference week.  School is dismissed at 12:20 each day.  I look forward to meeting with you all and discussing your child's success and future!  See you all soon!

Friday, Jan. 25 is Spirit/banking/Chick-fil-A day.....biscuits on sale for $2

Looking ahead:  Wednesday, Feb. 6th is an Early Release Day....dismissal at 12:20

Curriculum Updates:

Math: We just began a unit on fractions and measurement, with revisitation of regrouping, time, and money.

Language Arts: We are working on informational writing focusing on Ideas, Organization, and Sentence Fluency. 

Social Studies: We are beginning a unit on Japan, one of two countries we study in 2nd grade.

Science: We are focusing on motion, with celestial bodies to come in the coming weeks.

     *December 6th.....Barnes and Noble Jr. on Barrett Pkwy is hosting Nicholson Elem. for a storytime theater.  Be there at 7PM dressed (optional) as their favorite story character.  Special performances and storytime by the teachers of Nicholson. See below for complete details.

*************Curriculum Highlights**********************

In math, we are wrapping up our unit on time.  Please have your student tell you the time frequently using an analog (with hands) clock.  This is an ongoing skill they need to practice often.  Next week, we begin a unit on geometry, including solid shapes and angles.

Coinciding with our unit on the Pilgrims, we just began a unit on two Native American tribes: the Eastern Woodlands and Plains Indians.

Upcoming Events

Hello all!

First off, I would like to thank all those who attended our Math and Science night.  A great time was had by all! 

***Homework notice***    Next week will be a regular week for homework, including a homework packet, Math Blast Off, and nightly take-home books.  The following short week before Thanksgiving, there will be no folder going home. 

Our VIP luncheon is scheduled at 12:05 on Friday the 16th.  If you haven't had the turkey feast before, you will definitely want to come this year.  Our wonderful cafeteria staff makes a very impressive Thanksgiving spread.  We are given a 45 minute lunch time.   If you haven't returned your reservation sheet, please do so ASAP.  This will help the kitchen to be prepared. 

Coming up......Thanksgiving holidays.....no school Wed. the 21st through Friday the 23rd.   See you back on the 26th!  Have a wonderful and safe holiday!

Scholastic Book Fair this week from 7:30 to 4:00 every day but Friday, when it closes at 12:00.  Come and shop as there are some great bargains on books for your child(ask them about their wish list)!

Busy, busy, busy!

Hello all!

Is your child thinking about making a difference?  Sign up to enter the National PTA Reflections.  It is a national contest that offers students the opportunity to create works of art for fun and recognition.  The students are encouraged to submit a work of art in one of the following four areas:   literature, musical composition, photography, and visual arts.  If this sounds like something your child would like to participate in, please let me know, and I'll send home the appropriate forms.

This Friday the 28th has many reminders:

* Banking day/ Spirit Day

* Chick-fil-A (our new partners in education)  biscuits for sale $2

* Foundation MOVIE NIGHT!!  Doors open at 7:45 on the lower field...movie starts at 8PM.  Come for the movie, refreshments, raffles, and fun!

Coming up.......CARNIVAL 5-8PM Friday October 12th!!!  I will see you all there!!

Hello parents and students,

Things are moving along well in our classroom.  The children are quickly learning our rules and routines.  And lots of learning has been going on as well!  Ask your child what the three states of matter are, and if they can show you how to make a number four different ways!  I bet they can tell you! 

A few reminders:

* Please send back the completed Performing Arts permission slips ASAP.  Later this year, the 2nd grade will attend the ballet (show TBA) at the Cobb Civic Center, so I will need those forms returned.

* Next Wednesday the 12th is picture day.  All students will be photographed for the yearbook, regardless of whether or not you are purchasing a package.  So kids, look your neatest!

* Parents participating in the Nicholson Cookbook will need to have all recipes submitted NO LATER than Friday, the 14th. 

* Wednesday, Sept. 19, is an early release day....students home at 12:20.

* September 28th is Foundation Movie Night at 8PM!!  FUN, FUN, FUN!!!
