Time for Facts

We have made flash cards in order to memorize our multiplication facts.  Your student must recite each set of tables out of order in one minute or less.  The students will be tested on the facts each week and the deadline for memorizing each set is as follows:

Oct. 30 - 2's and 3's

Nov. 6  - 4's

Nov. 13 - 5's

Nov. 20 - 6's and 7's

Dec. 4 - 8's and 9's

Dec. 11 - 10, 11, 12

First In Math

We have a new incentive based math program. The students have been given their personal computer card which has been stapled in their homework folder.  Your child will earn virtual "stickers" as often as they can by logging onto the website. Our class is competing against all the other third grades, other grades, and schools across the nation.  Be sure to ask how many stickers your child has....we want to be a winning team!

October

Congratulations to Phoenix N. and Reilly M. for being elected as our Student Council Representatives.  This class election was perfect as far as coordinating with our Social Studies unit as we learned what a "representative democracy" is.

We have begun a unit in Science on Rocks and Minerals, about which the students are very excited.  Some of them have already brought in their gems and are enthusiastically sharing their background knowledge.

It is now time for multiplication, and that means we are going to study the facts each and every night.  I will be sending home a schedule of what facts are to be practiced each week. 

Narrative Writing has been the focus these past few weeks, and your child has been writing about a specific event in his or her life.  Be sure to ask your child what event they have shared.

August

August is almost over, and hopefully we are in our 3rd grade routine.  I want to thank those of you who attended Open House, and for sending all the supplies your child will need this year.  In Math we have been recognizing and representing numbers to 10,000.  Twelve out of eighteen students have already passed an addition timed test scoring 90% or higher...congratulations to those students.  Our new Language Arts program has had us doing shared reading, descriptive writing, complete subjects, and we have been "sorting" every day in Spelling.  Ask your child what "sorting" means.  We just finished a Health unit about making good choices and being responsible.  It's been a busy month.  Don't forget to sell Sally Foster...it's a great fund raiser.
