WEEKLY CURRICULUM UPDATE  11/16-11/20

MATH: This week we will compare and contrast 2D and 3D shapes using a Venn Diagram. We will also arrange shapes according to positional words (see standard below). Parents, please work with your child at home to distinguish LEFT from RIGHT.

Math Standards Addressed:

M1G2 Students will compare, contrast, and/or classify geometric shapes by the common attributes of position, shape, size, number of sides, number of corners.

M1G3 Students will arrange and describe objects in space by proximity, position, and direction (near, far, below, above, up, down, behind, in front of, next to, left or right of).

WRITING: We will continue to use the 6 Writing Traits to improve our narrative writing. We will review how important Organization is in our narratives so that our writing will make sense to the reader. We will practice a bold beginning, mighty middle, and an awesome ending when writing our narratives.

PHONICS(Words Their Way): This week we will identify, differentiate, and sort pictures for the consonant blends of sp, sk, and sm.

READING: We continue with Guided Reading Groups. Make sure your child reads the book to you to practice fluency.

SCIENCE: We continue our study of sounds by investigating important sounds (alarm clocks,loud speakers) and emergency sounds. We will learn how these sounds can help to keep us safe!

The Scholastic Book Fair is here this week! You may visit the Book Fair Monday-Thursday before school and after school until 3:00. Friday the Book Fair will close at noon.

Congratulations to our newest Terrific Kid...LAUREN!!  Lauren was selected as this month's Terrific Kid because she is so dependable, reliable, and trustworthy as our classroom messenger. Lauren will be honored during a ceremony on Tuesday, November 17. Bear Hugs to you, Lauren. Thanks for being a good role model for others!!

WEEKLY CURRICULUM UPDATE    11/9-11/13

MATH: We will begin our study of geometry by discussing how shapes are alike and different and how shapes make up the world around us. We will sort,identify and describe various 2 dimensional (plane) and 3 dimensional (solid) figures.  As you are driving from place to place or while shopping in stores have your child find different shapes and tell you how they know what shapes they are.

Math Standards Addressed:

M1G1 Students will study and create various two and three dimensional figures and identify basic figures (squares,circles, triangles,rectangles) within them.

M1G1a Build, draw,and describe triangles, rectangles, pentagons, and hexagons.

M1G1b Build, represent, name and describe cylinders, cones, and rectangular prisms (objects that have the shape of a box).

M1G2 Students will compare,contrast, and/or classify geometric shapes by the common attributes of position, shape, size, number of sides, number of corners.

WRITING: We will improve our narrative writing by discussing 6 Writing Traits to use to make our writing better.  We begin this week with Ideas. We will practice staying on topic when we write a narrative and adding interesting details to keep the reader's interest.

PHONICS (Words Their Way): We will identify and sort pictures for the sounds of the consonants s and t. Then we will blend these 2 sounds together to create a consonant blend of st. We will sort and identify pictures with this new sound.

READING: We continue with Guided Reading Groups. Make sure your child reads the book to you to practice fluency.

SCIENCE: We will begin our study of sound and investigate how vibrations produce sound. We will explore sounds that are high, low, loud and soft. Let your child take a listening walk and see if he can identify all sounds that are heard.

WEEKLY CURRICULUM UPDATE  11/2-11/6

MATH: We will continue to review our addition and subtraction facts to 12 using the strategies of counting on, counting back, using a number line, and fact families. At home please continue to practice these facts daily through the use of flash cards.

Math Standards Addressed:

M1N3e Understand addition and subtraction number combinations using strategies such as counting on, counting back, doubles, and making tens.

M1N3f Know the single addition facts to 18 and corresponding subtraction facts with understanding and fluency.Use strategies such as relating to facts already known and grouping facts into fact families.

WRITING: This week we get ready to publish our pattern books. Each author will create a front cover to get their reader's attention, and write an informational page about themselves (as the author and illustrator).Finally each author will read his book aloud to an audience!!

PHONICS(Words Their Way): We will review the consonant digraphs we have been studying for the past 2 weeks and sort pictures for the beginning sounds of wh,sh,th, and ch.

READING: We continue with Guided Reading Groups. Read the book sent home to practice fluency.

SOCIAL STUDIES: We will continue to review the life of Thomas Jefferson and how he made our life better today.

Bear Hugs go out to our AWESOME room mothers, Mrs. Beasley and Mrs. Whitehurst for the SPOOK-TACULAR Halloween celebration!! It was a "beary" special TREAT for all the children. Thanks, also, to Erin's Mom who came and helped with the fun!!

Bear Necessities

Parents, don't forget to pull off the pop-tops from your aluminum cans and send them to school with your child. Proceeds from recycling these tops help cover expenses at the Ronald McDonald House for families of children who are hospitalized.

Please send in donations  of rice and/or pasta products during our Thanksgiving Food Drive from Nov.2-13. This will help provide meals for families in our school community. THANKS!
