WEEKLY CURRICULUM UPDATE 1/30-2/3

MATH:We are working on numbers and place value from 1 to 100, skip counting, greater than, less than, equal to.

Math Standards Addressed:

M1N1a Represent numbers up to 100 using a variety of models, diagrams and number sentences. Represent numbers larger than 10 in terms of tens and ones using manipulatives and pictures.

M1N1c Compare sets using terms greater than, less than, and equal to.

M1N1d Understand the magnitude and order of numbers up to 100 by making ordered sequences and representing them on a number line.

M1N3a Identify one more than, one less than, 10 more than, and 10 less than a given number

M1N3b Skip count by 2's, 5's, 10's forward and backwards; to and from numbers up to 100

 

READING: We will be reading in Guided Reading Groups. Please remember to let your child read the guided reading book to you to practice fluency. Students will learn how to read and understand non-fiction text.

PHONICS: We will identify, differentiate, and sort pictures for the word families an, un, in.

WRITING: We continue  to write to inform the reader through Informational Writing and Non-Fiction features.

SCIENCE: Light and shadows will be our focus for Science.

WEEKLY CURRICULUM UPDATE 1/23-1/27

MATH:To prepare for the 100th day of school and for the 100 and 100+ Club we will be reviewing strategies fo help us add and subtract facts to 18. We will be practicing using flashcards here at school and with partner games. Please reinforce this practice at home.

 To be in the 100 Club in First Grade students must be able to solve 50 addition facts in 7 minutes and 50 subtraction facts in 7 minutes with 90% accuracy (along with 100 sight words for reading). To be in the 100+Club students must know an additional 25 addition facts  to 18 in 7 minutes and 25 additional subtraction facts to 18 in 7 minutes (along with 150 sight words).

Math Standards Addressed:

M1N3e Understand addition and subtraction number combinations using strategies such as counting on, counting back, doubles, and making tens.

M1N3f Know the single digit addition facts to 18 and corresponding subtraction facts with understanding and fluency.

M1N3h Solve and create word problems involving addition and subtraction to 100 without regrouping. Use words, pictures, and concrete models to interpret story problems and reflect the combining of sets as addition and taking away or comparing elements of sets as subtraction.

WEEKLY CURRICULUM UPDATE 1/16-1/20

MATH:We will be reviewing money from the last 9 weeks (making fair trades and showing different ways to make combinations to $1)

Math Standards Addressed:

M1N1e Exchange equivalent quantities of coins by making fair trades involving combinations of pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters up to one dollar; count out a combination of coins needed to purchase items up to one dollar.

M1N1f Identify bills ($1,$5,$10,$20) by name and value and exchange equivalent quantities by making fair trades involving combinations of bills; count out a combination of bills needed to purchase items that total up to twenty dollars.

Congratulations to our newest Terrific Kid...ANNA!! Anna was chosen because of her cheerful disposition everyday, self-confidence, and positive attitude toward school. She will be honored at a ceremony on Tuesday. Thanks, Anna, for being such a great role model for others. We are "beary" proud of you!!

Calendar Change:

Due to a county wide modification in the testing schedule for Gifted Services, the Target Open House scheduled for Thursday, January 19 has been cancelled. This meeting for parents of newly identified Target students will be rescheduled for early February. Thank you for your patience as we begin the testing process of students in first, third and fifth grades.
