Getting Ready To Start Another Year!

It's hard to believe that in just a few short weeks we will be heading back to school and to TARGET!  Here are just a few things to keep in mind as everyone prepares for a great adventure that is awaiting us all!

1. Please clean out all papers from the TARGET binder but KEEP the TAB DIVIDERS to use this year.

2. Check supplies to make sure they are in good condition.  The sales tax weekend is July 31- August 2, so don't miss out if you need any new items.

3. We will NOT have TARGET the first week of school. I will notify everyone in writing when their specific TARGET day is and what time we have lunch scheduled.

4. Hopefully everyone will have a good summer story to share when we see each other in August.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS for Nicholson's Meet and Greet. It is on Thursday,   August 6th from 5:30 - 7:00 p.m.

Up For A Real CHALLENGE?

Check out the link below and begin challenging yourself or on line opponents to battle math skills!  It is a great way to have fun keeping your calculating skills sharp this summer.!  Remember....always ask for parent permission before logging in to any sites on the web and NEVER USE YOUR REAL NAME ON THE INTERNET!  Good Luck!

www.calculationnation.com/

Calculation Nation™ uses the power of the Web to let students challenge opponents from anywhere in the world. At the same time, students are able to challenge themselves by investigating significant mathematical content and practicing fundamental skills. The element of competition adds an extra layer of excitement.

“The games on Calculation Nation™ provide an entertaining environment where students can explore rich mathematics,” said Jim Rubillo, Executive Director of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM). “Through these games, students are exposed to the same mathematical topics that they see in class as well as those that are recommended in Curriculum Focal Points.”

Calculation Nation™ is part of the NCTM Illuminations project, which offers Standards-based resources that improve the teaching and learning of mathematics for all students. Its materials illuminate the vision for school mathematics set forth in NCTM’s Principles and Standards for School Mathematics and Curriculum Focal Points.

Illuminations is also part of www.Thinkfinity.org, a comprehensive educational website funded by the Verizon Foundation to provide free educational resources to parents, teachers, and students. Thinkfinity.org is the cornerstone of Verizon Foundation’s literacy, education and technology initiatives. The goal of Thinkfinity.org is to improve student achievement in traditional classroom settings and beyond by providing high-quality content and extensive professional development training.

Summer Is Upon Us!

Imgp1053     Hopefully everyone is doing well this summer enjoying the gift of rain we had earlier in June!  A few things to update everyone on....first of all the Nicholson campus now has 4 new bat houses hanging near the primary play scape and walking track.  Thanks to a generous grant from Cobb Water we purchased these bat homes and Mr. Myers hung them!  Hopefully we will attract a colony or two of chiroptera by fall which will assist in keeping the mosquito population down for those using the campus.  Also, the county now has summer reading lists available on their homepage to keep us all in the habit of reading at least 20 minutes per day.  Just click on the link for the grade level you will be in in the fall!

ATTENTION ALL TARGET PARENTS!

Ani-message The Cobb Chapter of the GAGC is in jeopardy of dismantling.   Although the organizationhas many members, they currently have no one willing to step up and take a leadership position.  If you know of any parent in our community who might be interested and willing to take on this role, please contact Sandy.Swint@cobbk12.org.  This organization has provided great support over the last six plus years.  I believe it would be detrimental to have this advocacy group disband.   The current president is more than willing to stay on as a consultant.  She will provide advise and guidance to the new leader.

Please take time to consider your community to determine if you feel there is a parent who would be willing to volunteer for this important advocacy group.
Thank you,

Many thanks to all of the parents that sent in yummy food and drink for our medieval feast!  We loved every bite....although the ones sitting "below the salt" we not impressed with their social standing at the table!  It was made even more special by Ms. Schulz who provided a number of terrific costumes for the banquet!  Our unit Castles, Keeps and Kingdoms has been a huge success and the students reflected today on all they learned!  Kudos to all!
