March 19

We are having a big week.  The 2nd grade play "Go Fish" is Thursday, March 20.  The children should be in our room at 6:45.

The Book Reports were great.  We had maps, puppet shows, games, and models.  The next book report is due Friday, March 28.  Remember to choose a different type of report.  The summary must be turned in with the report.  We are looking forward to some new and exciting reports.

This week, we are completing our study on Japan.  Australia is our next adventure.

In Math, we are starting our last unit.  It includes multiplication and division.  The children do not need to memorize the facts unless they have mastered + and - facts.  www.mrmyer.org is a great website for addition, subtraction, and multiplication practice.

Persuasive writing is our focus in writing for this 9 weeks.

Thank you all for sending in the extra supplies.  We were running low.

Spirit Day is February 29.  We will have Chick Fil A biscuits on sale and it will also be Banking Day.  The new 100's Club Members will be announced so continue practicing your addition and subtraction facts.  Our first book report is also due on February 29.  Everyone should have their book.  The chapter books can be short or long, fiction or non-fiction.  The book reports should challenge your child to use their higher level thinking skills.  Encourage your child to be creative.  We can't wait to see and hear them.

Butterflies to Mexico

Did you know that the Monarch butterflies we see now are getting ready to fly to Mexico to spend the winter?  Our class worked with the 5th grade Target science "buddies" and learned about the Monarchs migrating to Mexico.  We will be learning about the life cycle of butterflies in the Spring.  The 2nd and 5th grade students designed butterflies that will be part of a symbolic migration that is provided by Journey North, a website that tracks seasonal changes and migrating animals.  Follow the journey at http://www.learner.org/jnorth/tm/symbolic/indexCurrent.html .  Our class is on the map under Mrs. Ashley-Serafine's name.  We had a total of 38 butterflies from Nicholson "migrate" to Mexico where Mexican school children will take care of our butterflies for the winter and then we will receive butterflies back- from other schools across  the USA and Canada.

The book of the month is The Teddy Bear by David McPhail.  We are writing a new adventure for the bearded man and the teddy bear.  Be sure and ask your child about their story.

Our performing arts field trip is Monday, October 29.  We will leave school at 9:15 and return in time for a sack lunch. Make sure everyone gets to school on time.
