DIAMONDS!!

Twirling diamond Congratulations to Nathan D. who won a gemstone for his mom, Dianne, for Mother's Day!  The students wrote about why their mom deserved a diamond in a writing contest sponsored by a local jeweler, David Douglas Diamonds & Jewelry, in memory of his mom.  Nathan did not win a diamond, but he was one of the second place winners who won a gemstone!  Dianne will get to choose the gemstone and have it set however she would like.  We are proud of Nathan's essay.

Important Media Center Information

Books Friday, May 1 is the last day for students to check out books, and Friday, May 8 is the day that all student books are due.  The last day that students will be allowed to take AR tests is May 11. We will continue to have book check out with our classroom library.

Also, there will be a Scholastic HALF PRICE Book Fair May 6 through May 8, 7:30 - 3:00 in the media center.  Save a few dollars to buy some good books for the summer reading.

Summer Bridge Books

Island with hammock An order form is coming home today that gives you the opportunity to purchase a Summer Bridge Book for your child to do this summer at a discounted price!  It is an excellent way to keep the skills fresh during the summer.  Each day the assignment is only 1 page, front and back, taking only a little time each day, in addition to their reading. The book cycles through and reviews and reinforces all skills.  Look for the order form in the Monday Mail! I highly recommend it!!

Blood Drive

There will be a Blood Drive sponsored by the American Red Cross at Nicholson on Friday, May 8th, 2009, 2:00 - 7:00.  To schedule an appointment to donate, please contact Daleis Hamrick at daleis.hamrick@cobbk12.org or call 770 928-5573.  All participants will receive a special gift from the Red Cross and will be entered in a regional promotion to win a cruise for two!!

Stamps

When the registration form for next year came home, there was a note enclosed about sending 3 stamps for your child's end of year report card and information. I have received stamps from only 5 of you.  If you choose not to send stamps, you can pick up your child's report card at Nicholson, June 1st through June 4th (our summer hours are from 8:00-6:00, closing for lunch from 11:30 till 1:00 and CLOSED on FRIDAY).  Thank you for sending them in promptly.

GA State Symbols

We have been learning about Georgia and its state symbols.  We found a really cool website where you can hear the sounds that the animals make by clicking on the button.

Science

Brasstown_Bald_Visit

Brasstown Bald in north GA

We are currently studying the five habitats of GA.  We will be learning about the habitats and the plants and animals living in them.  We will also discuss the unique features of the plants and animals that enable them to live in that particular habitat. The students need to review the habitats as we study them, so there is not so much information to learn at the end of the unit.

Poster Contest

   Soil

"Dig It! The Secrets of Soil"

That's the name of the new poster contest sponsored by the Cobb County Soil and Water Conservation District. I am linking the website to the title above for guidelines, specifics, and research links.  I want to encourage you all to participate.  This is the contest that Izah T. won last year (and received money!!)!  Izah won at the district and state level, and she and her family were invited to a special awards ceremony/luncheon at Callaway Gardens. She has been notified that her entry is one of the finalists at the national level. The deadline for the contest is April 24, 2009, and NACD will pick up any posters. Please let me know if your child plans on participating so that we can schedule a pickup.

Support St. Jude's

Cow Buy a chicken biscuit Friday morning for $2 and the proceeds will go to St. Jude's.  Nicholson had planned to stage a "Penny Wars" to benefit St. Jude's, but after the overwhelming support of Boosterthon, we decided, as a faculty, not to burden you with asking for more large sums of money!!  So, we decided to donate the proceeds of this month's Chick-fil-A biscuit sales to St. Jude's.  Nicholson has supported St. Jude's for the past several years with the Mathathon.  Everyone needs a good breakfast to start the day, so start Friday off with a chicken biscuit and give to a good cause with the same money!!
