Preschool Fall News

Fall is a wonderful time to be in preschool! The days are getting shorter, the air is getting crisp and cool, and all around us we see signs of autumn. Please share the signs YOU notice with your children every day!  Please make sure your child is wearing playclothes and has a sweater or jecket for the cooler mornings. 

We are having a fabulous year in preschool, and we am so very grateful for the support and reinforcement the children are getting at home.   As always, reading with your children every night is a wonderful gift you can give them!  Keep on reading!  Thank you for sharing your amazing children with us!  Ms Katie and Ms Kathy

Welcome to Preschool!

We are going to have a wonderful year in Special-Needs Preschool!  Our theme this year is "Exploration."  In preschool, we learn through play, through song, through stories, and through hands-on, high-interest activites every day.  Exploring the world is a messy job, so please send your child in playclothes-- we will often get dirty! 

A little about me:  I was born and raised in Virginia's Shenadoah Valley.  I have my bachelor's degree from Randolph-Macon Woman's College and my Master's from Walden University.  This is my tenth year teaching preschool and also my first year teaching Special Needs Preschool.  I spent the last two school years teaching a self-contained K-5 special education class at Sope Creek Elementary School.  My first career was as a professional artist, and I still paint professionally in my spare time.  I also love to read, camp, and do home improvement projects with my husband.  My husband and I have a busy household with a blended family of seven children: one in every grade from third to ninth.  I am thrilled to be at Nicholson.  My own children have all been Nicholson Stars and my youngest three are in third, fourth, and fifth grades here this year.   "Schulz-Ditchen" is a very difficult name for most preschoolers, so "Ms Katie" will be fine with me.

Thank you for sharing your children with us!  Ms Kathy and I are very excited to get the year rolling!

Guides for Adapting Early Literacy Activities for Infants, Toddlers and Preschoolers with Disabilities

The Center for Early Literacy Learning (CELL) has published 15 new CELL practice guides with adaptations for infants, toddlers and preschoolers, which show how to adapt early literacy activities so that young children with disabilities can participate. The guides can be used by practitioners or parents, or by parents in collaboration with practitioners. Happy New Year!

After we enjoyed our Sing-a-long on our last day of school in 2009 and fun holiday crafts and holiday celebration in December, we started our new year off reading The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats. Our class has enjoyed reading and retelling the books The Mitten and The Hat. We will be making fake "snow" for the class to play with as a fun way to wrap up our unit. We will also make snowballs with white paper to participate in a "snowball fight" as a movement activity in the classroom. Special snacks we have made are snowballs (made with marshmallows and Rice Krispies) and snowmen sandwiches.

We always incorporate math skills in everything we do! In addition to the GA pre-K math standards, we have had training on a "Hands on Standards" teacher manual that involves the use of math manipulatives to teach all kinds of math concepts. All of the SNP teachers were thrilled to receive a complete set of math manipulatives to use in the classroom! Some manipulatives include sorting circles and trays, attribute blocks, color cubes and tiles, link-n-learn links, pattern blocks, snap cubes and bear family counters. Look for ideas on ways to reinforce math skills at home in your child's folder.

In February we will be learning about where animals live, day and night, and hiberation.

Boosterthon is coming!

Boosterthon is coming!

Join us for Nicholson’s Boosterthon Fun Run on Feb. 11 to support our spring fundraiser.

Our goal this year is to raise $20,000.  Reaching this goal would make it possible for us to install an ELMO projection system in every classroom.  Ask your child about ELMO!  They love it as much as we do!

Help your child get pledges and come cheer them on at the Fun Run on Feb. 11 at 8:45 for our pre-K class, K, 1st & 2nd and 10:00 for 3rd, 4th, & 5th.

Fall Fun!

October has been a fun month as we have learned about Christopher Columber, our four seasons, spiders, bats, scarecrows and participated in other fun fall activities. We enjoyed seeing "Mr. Al" at the Robert Ferst Center at Georgia Tech where we sang and danced to his magical music. We recently finished a week learning about healthy habits which goes along with our foods and nutrition unit. Our read alouds will include To Market, To Market by Anne Miranda and There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed a Pie by Alison Jackson. We will have a “market” in our classroom in which our students will use play money to purchase items from our “market”. Our class has also enjoyed singing and clapping AABB patterns to the song “Turkey and Dressing.” We look forward to watching the Kindergarten Thanksgiving Program next week.
