As part of the fourth and fifth grade curriculum, your child will learn to play the soprano recorder. The recorder is a flute like instrument that was played back in the renaissance – baroque time periods (16th-18th century). It’s lack of keys and simple playing technique makes it a very popular instrument for facilitating music reading skills.
There are many different brands, as well as styles of the soprano recorder. The most common are made of plastic or wood. Recorders found at the dollar store are toys, not instruments. The differences in materials affect the tone quality of the instrument. Basically, you get what you pay for. The style and model we will be using is a three-piece soprano recorder made by Yamaha. At $8 per recorder, each comes with a cloth carrying case, neck strap, thumb rest and folder to keep their music in.
To make things simple and easier for your child, the school will be purchasing a class size set of recorders; all in same style and model to make for better tuning. You will have two options for obtaining one of these recorders. 1. You may purchase the instrument for your child and it will become theirs to keep or 2. Your child will be issued an instrument, free of charge, to be returned at the end of the school year. If it is lost or damaged, you will be held responsible for making up the cost.
The skills I teach them in class are like any skills they learn. The must practice those skills or they will not retain them, and will not be able to advance through the program. I use a sequential program called “Recorder Karate.” Students practice songs that work on a new skill (new note, rhythm, or musical expression) and play these songs for the class to earn colored belts that they attach to the bottom of their recorder. There are nine songs/colors in all: white, yellow, orange, green, purple, blue, red, brown, and black. Students who complete all the requirements of the program will be recognized at an awards ceremony at the end of the year.
