Ecologicial Footprint

Celebrate Earth Day, April 22nd!!!!

The Ecological Footprint estimates how much productive land and water you need to support what you use and what you throw away. Ecological Footprints can be calculated for individuals like you, communities, and even countries. We use natural resources when we consume, pollute, and discard garbage. If the Ecological Footprint indicates that more natural resources are used than the Earth supplies, than this is not a sustainable lifestyle.

To help Bobbie Bigfoot make sustainable decisions during his daily routine, visit Kid Footprints.

To measure your personal Ecological Footprint (and anyone else you know)...visit My Footprint.

ask your child..."Who Polluted the Hooch?"

Feed the Hungry

Earth Day is celebrated on April 22nd. Here's a way to make a difference in the world. It's a really cool website where we can actually help feed the hungry of the world one rice grain (well, actually 20) at a time.

FreeRice.com

The UN World Food Program has set up a website to help end hunger by donating rice for each vocabulary question that kids answer correctly.

Once you log in - click on the options tab so you can save your settings and keep a running total of the grains you've donated, along with your vocabulary level. As you keep track, bring your results to school. We'll keep a total at school. Mrs. Nelson and Mrs. O'Donnell's class are doing this too and we definately want to donate more grains than them, right?

How does playing the vocabulary game at FreeRice help me?

Learning new vocabulary has tremendous benefits. It can help you:

  • Formulate your ideas better
  • Write better papers, emails and business letters
  • Speak more precisely and persuasively
  • Comprehend more of what you read
  • Read faster because you comprehend better
  • Get better grades in high school, college and graduate school
  • Score higher on tests like the SAT, GRE, LSAT and GMAT
  • Perform better at job interviews and conferences
  • Sell yourself, your services, and your products better
  • Be more effective and successful at your job

After you have done FreeRice for a couple of days, you may notice an odd phenomenon. Words that you have never consciously used before will begin to pop into your head while you are speaking or writing. You will feel yourself using and knowing more words.

WHO WILL DONATE THE MOST GRAINS OF RICE?

Eastern Cobb County PTA AWARD WINNER!

CONGRATULATIONS TO HARRIS!!!!!!!

During our persuasive writing unit, we enetered a PTA "Honoring Our Heroes" Essay Contest. We had many, many outstanding (and persuasive) essays about realy heroes. Look for these coming home soon.

Harris D.'s essay about his great-grandfather was chosen to represent Nicholson at an Eastern Cobb County Council PTA Reception and Awards Program.

We're so proud of Harris. Here is his award-winning essay.

MY HERO

Faster than a speeding bullet. Stronger than a locomotive.Able to leap a building in a single bound. That might be the definition of your hero but mine is a 92 year old grandpa. Walks with a cane .Able to pick up only a book. And can’t jump over a puddle. Yes that’s my great grandfather my hero. He served in World War II for two long years. Plus, he made it out alive.

Without warning, my grandpa’s heart got broken in two when his loved wife died. Naturally, my whole family was sad especially my grandfather.

For the most part up until a couple of weeks ago every thing went smooth for him. Once again another horrible thing happened to him. While he was at church his heart missed a beat. He had to go to a hospital and get a pace maker in. After a few days he was fully recovered and healthy again.

I certainly want to be like him when I grow up. I’ll be the first to admit I found a moral in all this. You should always be ready for what pops up in life and whatever it is be strong about it. I will always honor my grandpa with love, passion, and hope.

PENNY WARS!

WOW! The force is strong at Nicholson. Student council helped Nicholson Stars raise $3,591.20 during our Penny Wars campaign. This week student council presented our check to the Rally Foundation (an organization that raises money and awareness for childhood cancer) in honor of Michael Steven, a former Nicholson Star and son of our own Mary Stevens in the cafeteria. We had an overwhelmingly enthusiastic turn out to the Penny Wars.

Congratulations to our class....

We donated more pennies than any other class with 12,792 pennies donated.

We also were "sabotaged" the most with 41,295in sabotage points against us.

It was a great week supporting a great cause.

A BIG thanks to Morgan's mom and Harris' mom and dad who helped count all those pennies with me!
