NEWSLETTER 3/9/09

Thank you turning in your Boosterthon pledges. It is very encouraging to see that families and businesses from all over support our school and its students. It is not too late to turn in pledges! DREAM BIG...SWEET CHICKEN

Download HW mar 6 By now you have had a chance to see our new homework format. Please check off the boxes, list book titles and attach all work. Homework is due on Fridays and you will also be able to view it on my blog.

Vocabulary

These are words your child should be able to recognize when reading. The word list is on the homework page.

Practice the 50 vocabulary words for the third nine week grading period. Assessment for this list has begun.

Spelling

These are words that your child must learn to spell.

have, they, from, this, what, when, had, were, by, with, one

challenge words: house, more, that, why

Curriculum Notes

Writing: We continue our unit on informational writing. The students are learning how to take notes and organize information. We will also learn to write directions (how to).

Phonics: We are working on plurals (s, es). The students are learning to identify parts of speech: nouns, verbs, adjectives.

Reading: The students are required to read one AR book a week and take a test.

Social Studies: The students will learn about American Heroes, Harriett Tubman, George Washington Carver and Theodore Roosevelt.

Science: We continue our study of plants.

Math: A test will be given over the material we have covered over the last nine weeks: Money, fractions, data, addition and subtraction to 18.

You child must wear sneakers on PE days.

Newsletter First Grade 2/24

BOOSTERTHON

Thank you all for your participation in the Boosterthon. It has been a fantastic experience for our classroom. The positive and enthusiastic attitude of the Boosterthon guys has definitely encouraged the students as well as myself. It was great to see so many of the families at the Fun Run. Our class did an amazing job of getting pledges. I'm sure that you heard about our rocket party. We had the most new pledges in one day. Let's be just as diligent collecting pledges as we have a very quick turn around. All pledges are due this Thursday, February 26th. Please turn in all funds at one time in the envelope that was sent home. Remember...DREAM BIG...SWEET CHICKEN!!!

Written homework for the week is due on Fridays. Read for at least 10 minutes each night. Remember AR homework assignment. Practice addition and subtraction facts to 18. Continue to practice counting money to $1.00 Work on telling time to the hour and half hour.

First Grade Classroom News

VALENTINE'S DAY

Valentine's Day is coming soon. We will exchange cards of Fri., Feb. 13. Please include all of the students (15). This is an optional activity. Cardholders will be made in class.

Homework AR READING

Each student is required to read one accelerated reading book and take a test on the computer each week. This will help the student's reading and comprehension skills. The kids can pick out books from the media center and there are also several books available in the classroom. Please read the book at least one time with your child and ask questions about the book. The student should reead the book a couple of times on their own before taking the test.
