END OF THE YEAR NEWS

FIRST GRADE END OF THE YEAR NEWS

I am so pleased with the progress the first graders have made this year. The students have so many talents as evidenced from their music performance.  Keep an eye out for a very special DVD coming your way!  It is so important to continue reading and practicing math skills throughout the summer.  Take advantage of the public library and book stores that have story time and FREE activities.  Thank you for sharing your kids with me.  I have enjoyed getting to know all of my Nicholson families.

 

 

Curriculum Notes

Writing: The topic for our summative writing assignment is as follows:  Who is your favorite author and why?

Phonics: The students are reviewing word families, blends, parts of speech, vowels and rhyming words.

Reading:  The students will continue reading leveled books in class.

Social Studies: The students will learn about goods and services and wants and needs.

Science: Comparing and describing animals will be our focus in science.

Math:  Review of math skills taught throughout the year.

You child must wear sneakers on PE days.

END OF YEAR

As we approach the end of our school year please remind your child that we still have lots to do to get ready for second grade. Classroom expectations remain high.

Please sign and return permission slips for the first grade music performance.

HOMEWORK   

Written homework is due this Friday.

Vocabulary  The sight words for the 4th nine weeks can be downloaded. Download Sight Words

These are words your child should be able to recognize when reading. The word list is on the homework page.

Practice the 50 vocabulary words for the fourth nine week grading period. 

Spelling

The students are expected to spell No Excuse Words correctly all of the time.

Curriculum Notes

Writing: Our focus is on response to literature.  

Phonics: The students are reviewing word families and blends.

Reading:  The students are required to read one AR book a week and take a test. Our author study continues with Eric Carle.  We will hopefully wrap up our Reader's Theatre this week.

Social Studies: The students will learn about goods and services and wants and needs.

Science: Comparing and describing animals will be our focus in science.

Math:  We will be learning how to recognize multiples of ten.

You child must wear sneakers on PE days.

CRCT

Testing starts this week, April 21-24.  Your child must be on time.  Do not make any plans to have your child come to school late or leave early during that week.  Make sure your child gets plenty of sleep and eats a healthy breakfast.  Don't forget to send a healthy snack.  Please don't worry or stress.  The kids will be just fine.

GAME DAY

The students have earned a game day for all star behavior.  Your child may bring in an age appropriate game to share this Tuesday, April 21.

Only three more weeks until Spring Break and this week begins the last nine week grading period for first grade.  The time has gone by very quickly and I am encouraged with the growth of the students.  I think we all have a bit of spring fever.  Please remind your kids that we still have high expectations for learning and behavior.

Donations of hand sanitizer would be most appreciated. Help our class stay healthy.

Newsletter First Grade 2/24

BOOSTERTHON

Thank you all for your participation in the Boosterthon.  It has been a fantastic experience for our classroom.  The positive and enthusiastic attitude of the Boosterthon guys has definitely encouraged the students as well as myself.  It was great to see so many of the families at the Fun Run.  Our class did an amazing job of getting pledges. I'm sure that you heard about our rocket party.  We had the most new pledges in one day.  Let's be just as diligent collecting pledges as we have a very quick turn around.  All pledges are due this Thursday, February 26th.  Please turn in all funds at one time  in the envelope that was sent home.  Remember...DREAM BIG...SWEET CHICKEN!!!

VALENTINE'S DAY

Valentine's Day is coming soon.  We will exchange cards of Fri., Feb. 13.  Please include all of the students (15).  This is an optional activity.  Cardholders will be made in class.

Each student is required to read one accelerated reading book and take a test on the computer each week.  This will help the student's reading and comprehension skills.  The kids can pick out books from the media center and there are also several books available in the classroom.  Please read the book at least one time with your child and ask questions about the book.  The student should reead the book a couple of times on their own before taking the test.

 Written homework for the week is due on Fridays.  Read for at least 10 minutes each night.  Practice addition and subtraction facts to 18.  Continue to practice counting money to $1.00.
