I am sure that you have heard all about our new student teacher, Mrs. Zohbe. She is fitting right into our class. She is slowly taking over some of the subject areas. I will still be in the classroom helping out and making sure that all of the curriculum is covered.

Our 100^th day of school is quickly approaching! It will be Friday, January 27^th. We will be having a school wide celebration. When the students learn the 100 items required (all upper case and lower case letters, numbers 1-20, 20 sight words and the color words) they will enter the 100's club. To be in the 100+ club, they will need to master the 100 club items plus 10 more sight words, all letter sounds, know the names and values of the coins and be able to write their first and last name correctly.

We had a great time on the field trip to the Tells Museum. We saw a great show about day and night in the Planetarium and learned about gravity and motion.

In the next couple of weeks, I will be testing the students to determine what reading level on which they are reading and comprehending. I am so excited to see how far they have come!

Candy Cane grams will be sold in the front of the school near the media center on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of next week. The sweet holiday messages will be delivered on Thursday, Dec. 22, so get your orders in to make sure you don't miss out on taking part! Look for pre-order forms coming home this week.

The next two weeks are going to be so busy and so much fun!

On Tuesday, we will be starting the last part of our economic unit focusing on our needs and our wants and goods and services. I think that this unit comes at a wonderful time of year and hopefully your child has a deeper understanding of what he/she truly NEEDS to live versus what he wants to make life more fun. You might have also been serenaded with the song "You can't always get what you want at (insert the store you are in)" This works wonders with my two boys when we are out shopping.

Tuesday-Thursday your child will be going to their "job" that they have been hired for in my "mall." They will work for three days, earn money for their hard work and a bonus if they do exceptional. On Friday, they will get to go shopping with the money they earned and buy the goods that their class mates made. It is so much fun!

December 19-22 we will be assessing the final skills for the report card, having our holiday party where we will be making gingerbread houses, and we will finish the week with Pajama Day and the sing-a-long!

I can't believe it is the end of the year already! Where did the time go?!?!

Dear Parent(s)/Guardians:

 

On September 21, 2011 from 3:00PM-4:00PM, State Superintendent of Education, John D. Barge, along with staff in the GA Department of Education Curriculum and Instruction division, will host a web-delivered broadcast through Georgia Public Broadcasting to introduce to all stakeholders the upcoming Common Core Georgia Performance Standards (CCGPS).

 

To provide you with a brief history, the state of Georgia, along with 47 other states, has adopted a new set of standards that are geared towards unifying the standards that are used from state to state and enabling students to be college & 21^st century workplace and career ready upon graduating from high school.

 

If you are unable to view the initial broadcast, it will air again from 4:00PM-5:00PM, and then an archived version will appear the following day. Three days later, a closed-caption version of the broadcast will air through the same site. The Web link for the initial broadcast and the archived sessions will be:

I cannot believe that we have been in school four weeks already! I have really enjoyed getting to know your children through our class meetings and just throughout the day!

Questions/Topics for this past week: What words can you make with the letters 'h,t,o, and p'? Show me or tell me an ABAB pattern. Find the word the in a book. (We have been highlighting it in Nursery Rhymes). Tell me what you learned about Labor Day? What were your Hh pictures in your four box?

Curriculum Updates:

We will be starting reading groups this week! Look for a reading envelope to come home with your child a few days a week. Please have your child read the book to you at least twice. This is in addition to the nightly homework and practicing sight words every night.

In Writing we are working on drawing a detailed picture and writing at least two sentences about it.

In math we are working on calendar skills, sorting, patterns and numbers 0-5.

In social studies we will be comparing the Georgia Flag and the USA flag and learning about the Pledge of Allegiance.

I love my birthday flowers! Thank you so much for thinking of me!

First let me start by saying it was so nice to see so many of you at our Open House on Thursday Night! I hope that it wasn't too overwhelming and that you are now even more excited about our kindergarten year. I know it is going to be a super one!

Questions for this past week: What did you learn to draw in your journals this week? (a person with background-at least 5 details and 5 colors) What was the first sentence that you wrote in your journal? (I see their name.) Have them show you with their bodies what a capital letter, period and space between words look like. Ask them if they filled someone's bucket, and if they don't know, ask them how they can fill someone's bucket next week.

In my weekly blog, I will be adding our reading, writing, math, socials studies and science focuses. I will also be giving you a few questions that you can ask your child to help you get more than "I don't know" when you ask them what they learned in school.

My questions/points for the week are:

What is sorting/ what did you sort? Tell me about the penny.

Tell me as many Tt words that you can think of. Find an exclamation point in a book that you read.

Math- positional words- inside, outside, above, below, beside

Phonics- We are learning the sounds that the letters make through Zoo Phonics. Our spotlight letter for last week was Tt.

Social Studies- importance of having rules in our classroom.
