WEEKLY CURRICULUM UPDATE 1/23-1/27
MATH:To prepare for the 100th day of school and for the 100 and 100+ Club we will be reviewing strategies to help us add and subtract facts to 18. We will be practicing using flashcards here at school and with partner games. Please reinforce this practice at home.
To be in the 100 Club in First Grade students must be able to solve 50 addition facts in 7 minutes and 50 subtraction facts in 7 minutes with 90% accuracy (along with 100 sight words for reading). To be in the 100+Club students must know an additional 25 addition facts to 18 in 7 minutes and 25 additional subtraction facts to 18 in 7 minutes (along with 150 sight words).
Math Standards Addressed:
M1N3e Understand addition and subtraction number combinations using strategies such as counting on, counting back, doubles, and making tens.
M1N3f Know the single digit addition facts to 18 and corresponding subtraction facts with understanding and fluency.
M1N3h Solve and create word problems involving addition and subtraction to 100 without regrouping. Use words, pictures, and concrete models to interpret story problems and reflect the combining of sets as addition and taking away or comparing elements of sets as subtraction.

Welcome Back....hoping that everyone had a great winter break enjoying time with family and friends!!! Looking forward to some great content this 3rd 9 week period....buckle up as we continue working hard this second half of the year! A blink and your first graders will be in second grade!! :)

Calendar Change!
Due to a county wide modification in the testing schedule for Gifted Services, the TARGET ‘Open House’ scheduled for Thursday January 19th has been cancelled. This meeting for parents of newly identified TARGET students will be reschedule for early February. Thank you for your patience as begin the testing process of students in first, third and fifth grade.
Check out the new fence on the primary playground. It was installed over the break. Thank you to Mrs. Katie Schulz-Ditchen for writing the grant to purchase this great safety equipment!
Gym Floor Update~ We are about ½ way to meeting our goal for the new gym floor. We will look forward to the Spring Fun Run which should raise the remaining funds.

WEEKLY CURRICULUM UPDATE 12/5-12/9
MATH:We are working with money, counting coin combinations up to 50 cents and bills to $20. For reinforcement, ask your child to practice counting change, to name the coins you find in your pocket or purse, and to make "fair trades" which is showing the same amount of money in different ways. For example 33 cents can be made with a quarter, a nickel, 3 pennies or 3 dimes and 3 pennies. We will soon be working with $1, $5, $10, and $20 bills. Ask your child to help you count out some bills when shopping to give him/her real world experience.

MATH: We are beginning geometry. We are learning about 2 and 3 dimensional figures including circles, squares, triangles, rectangles, pentagons, hexagons, spheres, cubes, cylinders, cones and rectangular prisms. You can help at home by having your child identify these shapes by searching for them in the home.
Math Standards Addressed:
M1G1 Students will study and create various two and three dimensional figures and identify basic figures(squares, circles, triangles, and rectangles) within them.
M1G2 Students will compare, contrast, and/or classify geometric shapes by the common attributes of position, shape, size, number of sides and number of corners.
M1G3 Students will arrange and describe objects in space by proximity, position, and direction(near,far,below,above, up, down, behind, in front of, next to, and left or right of).

WRITING: We are continuing to work on our narratives. Our writing focus is to use details, write neatly using word walls and books to help with spelling, and to use graphic organizers to help with ideas. We will continue to use capitals and correct punctuation in our writing.
SCIENCE: We are beginning our investigation of sound and how vibrations produce sound. We will learn about high and low sounds (pitch) and volume(loud or soft). You and your child may choose to talk about emergency sounds that keep us safe.

READING: We may not get to guided reading groups every day this week with the conference schedule. Please read nightly with your child. A list of the 2nd 9 weeks sight words recently came home, or will be coming home this week, with your child. I have already assessed them and highlighted words for them to practice.
PHONICS: We will begin the consonant digraphs -sh and -ch and sort pictures and words with these sounds.
WRITING: We will begin to write pattern books by choosing repeating words, phrases, or sentences to include in our books.We will use our shared reading books as models for our stories.
SCIENCE: We will continue our study of magnets. We will identify different objects that are attracted to magnets or repelled by magnets. Look for magnets you may have in your home.

You can help your child to identify the penny, nickel, dime and quarter at home. Having them count the spare change in your pocket is a great way to practice. Always start counting with the highest value coin. We will also review the concepts taught this 9 weeks: addition/subtraction facts to 10, place value, greater than/less than/equal to, and graphing.

All first graders will be taking the Cognitive Abilities Test on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of this week. The CogAT is a multiple-choice test that measures student performance on abilities related to success in school subjects. To help your child prepare for this test:
