Second Graders Matter to ESOL!!!

Second Graders MATTER to ESOL!

MATTER is everywhere and in everything!  Our ESOL second graders know that MATTER has three forms also called states; liquid, solid and gas.  A solid has a definite shape and a definite volume.  The liquid is a state of matter that takes on the shape of its container with a definite volume.  And the third type of matter, called gas, takes the shape and volume of a given container.  In class we have filled out a graphic organizer to  better understand the three types of matter and their properties.

Some ways that you can help as parents are; making jello together as you describe the phases of matter or checking out books from the library about matter like “What’s the Matter in Mr. Whisker’s Room” by Michael Ross.

Scientific Method

To be a good scientist you need to learn

that the Scientific Method is

Scientistpromoa way to solve the problem!

Why does it not rain salt water

Is the experiment of the day,

We wait and observe to see

If our hypothesis is ok.

Para ser un buen científico

debemos aprenderMad_scientist_sml_2

como el Método Científico

nos ayuda con los problemas y preguntas

que tenemos que resolver.

Porque no llueve agua salada nos

gustaría saber,

esperamos y observamos y

confirmamos si nuestra hipótesis esta bien.

happily ever after is how they end.

Traditional literature

Is fun to learn.

To think that it started with stories orally said.

todos son felices al final.

Nos encanta leer

Through reading THE RAG COAT we learned

That school is a place

Were we all come to do more than learn

We visited farms and made butter

In the cities it was fun to see all the clutter

City Mouse and Country Mouse taught us all

there is certainly no place like home!Citymouse

We made connections from text to self;

from text to text;

sometimes from text to world,

when eating salsa or even crepes

and saying OLE

and learning that Oo lala means divine

in French

The best part of all is when we all had the debate

It was friendly and it showed we learned!

Leyendo el libro “THE RAG COAT”

Entendimos muy bien

que a la escuela venimos a compartir y aprender Fcityb

Visitamos fincas y preparamos mantequilla

Texto a nuestras experiencias,

Nursery Rhymes- Word Families

The nursery rhymes

Are the first theme we are teaching this time.

With rhymes we will learn

That in English, many words in word families end.

Humptydumpty

Poemas en Rima- Palabras que riman

Los poemas de ninos en rima

Son una gran manera de darles la bienvenida.

Con ellos aprenderemos, como miles de palabras

en ingles terminan en rima.

Introductory letter to ESOL class and teachers

August 2007

Dear Nicholson ESOL parents, guardians and students,

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to you as the new part time ESOL teacher here at Nicholson.  My name is Miss Vanis and this is my first year teaching ESOL.  I am a certified speech language pathologist and have taught in Cobb County for 7 years as a speech teacher. I am excited to join Mrs. Freeman’s ESOL team and to work with your precious children!

Our ESOL theme for this year will be, “Go Green” as we explore various ways to care for our environment and world around us throughout the school year.  In ESOL class we will be aligning the ESOL classroom work with the student’s grade level curriculum to support academic language and to ensure school success.  Nicholson’s school wide goal is to improve achievement in written communication.  Therefore, in ESOL class, we will also be supporting this school wide goal as we engage in collaboration writing and 6 plus 1 in the form of responses to literature, narrative writings, post cards and friendly letters.

Our ESOL motto for 2007-2008 school year is threefold:  Equip, Empower and Exit.  First, we will equip your child with the specific tools necessary to improve their communication skills and academic success.  Second, we will empower the student to use their newly developed skills by providing positive learning opportunities.  And finally, we will aim to exit your student from ESOL services and return your child to the general education setting.

Throughout the year, we would like to give your children rewards, including candy.   If this is permissible, please sign this letter and return it to Miss Vanis or Mrs. Freeman.   Please include any food allergies or special diet needs that you would like us to be aware of at the bottom of this letter.

We are also looking forward to working with you.  We can be reached by phone at (770) 928-5573 or by email valerie.vanis@cobbk12.org or ani.freeman@cobbk12.org if you have any questions or would like to schedule a meeting.  Mrs. Freeman is the full time ESOL teacher and Miss Vanis will be at Nicholson half time; Nicholson Elementary during the afternoon and Kincaid Elementary in the morning.

We are looking forward to another successful star-studded school year in ESOL class!

Ani Freeman and Valerie Vanis
