FIELD DAY May 14(Thursday)

Field-day-color Field Day is not just for kids it is for Parents too.  We are excitingly preparing for Field Day to celebrate a year of hard work coming to a close.  Games Games Games and more Games!!!!

PARENTS:  We need you to volunteer to help with Field Day.  We need some parents to run some of the games.  If you are interested please email me or send a note in with your child by May 13.  Indicate your name, child's name, and teacher's name.  I promise that you will see your child play the game that you are working.  Email me at Michael.Dougherty@cobbk12.org with the information. 

Report to the Gym at 7:45 on May 14 for your assignment.  Hope to see you there.  We cannot have Field Day without our Parent Volunteers.

Soccer

For the next 2 Weeks our Student Teacher from KSU will be teaching a unit a soccer.  Soccer is the most popular sport among elementary school aged schildren.  The Students will be learning various skills involved with the game of soccer and applying the skills in actual games. The physical education standards met dluring this unit is as follows:

Standard 1

Demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities.

Standard 2

Demonstrates understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics as they apply to learning and performance of physical activities.

Standard 3

Participates regularly in physical activity.

Standard 4 

Achieves and maintains a health-enhancing level of physical fitness.  

Standard 5

Exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others in physical activity settings.

Standard 6: Values physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and/or social interaction

In February the Nicholson PTA and Foundation will sponsor a unique and terrific fundraiser called the the Boosterthon Fun Run. This fundraiser will be used to help with technology upgrades at our school. Please visit

Strategic Games

Ice_Chess_Jovanka_Callum In the Physical Educational setting thinking can be a challenge due to our excitement overpowering our thoughts.  This is a constant challenge that we try to let our thoughts rule our emotions.   To help empower our thoughts we will be playing games that require strategic thought in order to play the game.  The physical education standards the students will work on will be:

New GAMES

768_funny-face  This week the Nicholson students will be learning and experiencing games never played before.  Games that will challenge their intellect along with their physical assets.  New games add excitement and energy to the brain and social experiences.  All the physical education standards will be emphasized, especially fun, during this week.

Throwing and Catching

Eli_2 Upper Grades:  Extending, Refining and Applying our Throwing and Catching skills.  These 2 important skills are evident throughout most athletic activities.  If an athlete can perfect the throw and catch he/she can be successful in most games. 

Lower Grades:  Students will be refining their Locomotor skills of skipping, galloping, side-stepping, and much more.  Balance and muscle strength is a must.

The standards all grades are practicing are:

GAMES

Web5463pe Playing various games challenges the mind in absorbing information in many different forms.  Playing games involves intellectual skills that range from strategy, evaluating, analyzing, and applying.  Fun stimulates the mind as well as relieves stress that can open the information pathway for the rest of the day.  The physical educational standards involved with game playing is:  Demonstrates understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics as they apply to learning and performance of physical activities

Jump Rope

Jumprope Jumping rope is a challenging exciting way to increase you cardiovascular stamina.  Students will learn different ways to jump rope to increase thinking power while pushing their energy to the limits.  The Physical Education Standards Jump Rope focuses on is:

Welcome Back to P.E.

Welcome back to school Nicholson Stars!!  Nicholson is the place where tomorrows Athletes shine brightly today.  As you enter a new grade level you will be experiencing new activities in Physical Education (P.E.) class. In P.E. you are not only getting exercise and performing athletic skills but everyday we will TRY to control our thoughts and actions while our emotions are stirring.
