A Word From Mrs. Davenport and Mrs. Frigerio:

We cannot believe that we are already more than halfway through the school year!  Your children are progressing nicely and getting ready for first grade!  We enjoyed our 100th Day Celebration!!! Thank you to everyone for sending in our 100 day snacks.  They had a ball counting out 10 of each snack to make 100.  It was really YUMMY!

Congratulations:

Congratulations to all of our Darling students who made the 100 Club and the 100 Plus Club!  We are extremely proud of you!!!  Please remember if you are not in the 100 Club or the 100 Plus Club yet, keep practicing!  You can still reach that goal and receive the silver/gold medals on Spirit Days.

Davenport’s Darling News

November 2007

A Word from Mrs. Davenport and Mrs. Frigerio

It is almost time for Thanksgiving and our Darlings are learning, learning, learning!!!  We have been studying about Columbus Day, fire safety, pumpkins, and Healthy Choices.  We are looking forward to studying the First Thanksgiving.  I will be calling to schedule fall conferences with some of you.  If you need to talk to me or have a concern please feel free to call or email me.  We had an awesome time on our field trip to the YMCA.  The tractor ride and picking our favorite pumpkins were definitely the highlight of the day!!!  A special thanks goes to Mrs. Luchenbill, Mrs. DeVore, and Mrs. Clark for being awesome field trip chaperones!  Thank you so much to those who bought us books from the book fair.  We have already read some of them and they are absolutely terrific!

Welcome

We are sad that Caleb Dean has moved.  Please remove him from the class directory.  But… we are thrilled to say that we have a new student!  Her name is Arelly Cartagena.

Literacy

Please continue to work on recognizing ALL capital/lower case letters and their sounds.  Also practice those sight words every night.  We will continue to add to our list.  Writing is our goal this year and we are learning how to write sentences.  At home, when your child asks, “how do you spell…” please encourage your child to begin sounding out words.  If they are getting the first letter of the word that is great, but continue encouraging them.

Reminders

* Please continue to check your child’s bookbag EVERY night for important papers and homework (and be sure to clean out the folder nightly).

* Make sure your child brings a snack every day.  We do not have extra snack for the kids.

* Also it is getting really cold outside.  Please make sure your child has a jacket and it is labeled.  If they do not have a jacket they have to stay inside while everyone else is at recess.

* Thanksgiving play is on Friday, November 16 at 8:15 a.m.

* No school November 5 and 6.

* Thanksgiving break is November 22nd-24th.  Enjoy your family time!!!

Fall is Here!!!!

Fall is on it's way!!!  The students are growing academically and emotionally.  We have some fun things coming up.

Math- We have been learning about patterns, sorting, positional words, and we have begun to work on our numbers 1-5.  We have also introduced the penny and the nickle.  Next week we will be learning the numbers 6-10.

Language Arts- This week we learned the letter B.  Next week we will be studing the A, and doing all sorts of fun activities with the letter A.  Johnny Appleseed's birthday is next week.  So, we will be learning about him and why he is important.  The students will need to bring in an apple on Thursday and we will be doing a lot of fun activities.

Social Studies- I have enjoyed learning all about my little darlings and I can't wait to learn more.  We will continue to talk about family and friends.

Science- We will be learning about our five senses.

Writing- We have begun a new writing block called Writing Workshop.  The students have learned about periods and capitalization.

Reminders- Continue to send in one snack for your child.  Also, remember to look at your child's folder every night and review the sight words every night.  We have Movie Night on September 28, Fall Carnival on October 12, and our Kindergarten field trip on October 19.  We are looking forward to each and every one of these events.

WELCOME!

Welcome to kindergarten!  We have had a busy two weeks adjusting and getting settled and now we are on our way!!  It’s time to send in school supplies if you haven’t already sent them.

Thank you for helping us out during the first two weeks with the nametags denoting transportation!  Please remember to send a written note if there is a transportation change from the child’s usual schedule or send a note in on Monday letting us know the transportation schedule for the week.

Thanks to all of those who attended Open House! If you have any further questions please feel free to contact your child’s teacher.  Also, remember to send any written communication, money, etc. in your child’s take home V.I.P. folder.  The folder will be checked each morning for correspondence.  Parents should check the folder each evening for notes and daily work sent from school.

Next week, we will begin our phonics study with the letter S.  We will be introducing the sight words I and see.  It is a good idea to begin making flash cards to use at home with the words introduced each week.  Our math time will focus on relationship words such as below, above, beside, behind, between, in front of, inside, and outside.  We will also be sorting by size, shape and color and begin identifying and continuing patterns.  Please check the monthly calendar for homework and skills being introduced so that you can reinforce your child’s learning at home! The September calendar will be coming home next week.  We hope you are as excited as we are about the coming year!  Please partner with us to make it a successful one!!
