Instruct1 Language Arts

English & Grammar: We are finishing with adverbs and will begin improving our proofreading skills.

Writing: We have been writing informational essays on colonial times. The children took notes that centered on main ideas and details, and then created paragraphs from these ideas. The papers are almost finished and are looking very good! Our focus this week will be "writing to a prompt." The class will become familiar will the different types of prompts, as well as, the steps to follow in creating a well organized piece of writing. Then we will work on persuasive writing.

Reading: We will be doing some activities centered around our book of the month, I Love You the Purplest. I also plan to mix in a little CRCT practice. Following that, it is back to informational text with a focus on one particular author.

Math

This week we begin the last nine weeks of school, and we will switch math classes. Some of the children will have a new math teacher. Multiplication of decimals using area models will be our starting topic.

Social Studies/Science

Social Studies will focus on the Southern Colonies and events leading to the Revolutionary War.

In science, the new topic will be light.

Thank you

Tn_star1 Thanks so much to the parents and students that helped to make Teacher Appreciation Day so great. Penny Wars

Today, not a long time ago…In a Nicholson Star Galaxy, not far away…

PENNY WARS

It is a new age for Nicholson Stars…

Nicholson Stars have joined forces with the RallyKids Foundation to raise money and awareness for CHILDHOOD CANCER RESEARCH.

.

THE RULES

Your class wins a PENNY WARS battle scoring the most penny points in a day.

Each penny in your class jug counts as one point. Any other type of money – coin or bill counts subtracts points – by each value.

Examples – a nickel subtracts 5 points

                 a dime subtracts 10 points

                 a dollar subtracts 100 points

                a 50 dollar bill subtracts 5,000 points!

All class jugs will be in the cafeteria. You may drop your coins and bills before school.

.

Results will be announced the following day and the winning class will be rewarded.

.

PENNY WARS lasts 5 days –

February 25 – 29

Every student will receive an offical Penny Wars Bag with the rules and their first penny to play on Friday, Feb. 22nd. Look for it coming home.

.

Good luck,

Nicholson Student Council

Mathathon

Math-a-Thon

The Mathathon for St. Jude's Hospital is now winding down, and your child should be finishing up his problems in his booklet/CD or online.  It's now time to start collecting the pledges from friends and family members which we will donate to St. Jude's Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.  Did you know that the average 2-year treatment for cancer costs around $500,000?  Your donations help families cover the cost of this expensive treatment so that no one ever has to be turned away from getting the help that they desperately need.

Please turn in your collection envelope by February 29, and remember, those students turning in at least $35 will receive a free ticket to Six Flags and a Mathathon t-shirt.  And perhaps even more importantly, your child will be learning a valuable lesson by helping others in need.

Studentnewscolor1Students need to keep reading daily and using the reading strategies we have learned. This will improve  comprehension skills and increase reading levels. Please continue filling out your monthly reading logs and your SIX FLAGS Reading Logs. Another great activity is taking the CRCT practice tests on line. Students who practice score higher on the CRCT and feel more confident when taking the actual test! You will need the user name and password to acess the tests. You can refer to the letter that was sent home last month. If you are unable to locate the letter, just contact me for the information. Thank you for your time during conference week. It was a pleasure to meet with all of you.
